May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and promoting the importance of emotional well-being. It’s crucial for people who are helping others, such as activists, nonprofit direct service providers, and anyone who has the tendency to prioritize a mission to change the world above themselves to pay attention to their own mental health as well. We experience high levels of stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue due to the nature of our work. Taking care of ourselves through self-care activities, seeking support, and being aware of warning signs of mental health issues can help prevent mental health challenges from becoming more severe. This Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s commit to prioritizing our own mental health and supporting those around us to do the same.
